Three unknowns this time: at least to me. I don't think I've ever been as shocked about an interview as I was today. Not just a lack of preparation (it seemed), but also a lack of awareness of what it is we do at the community college, who we teach, why we exist. Not that I have all the answers to these things, but community colleges are uniquely positioned. We're not universities yet we must provide something like it to our transfer students. We're not trade schools yet we must honor the need for work that many students bring. We must be flexible and fair, intellectually grounded and increasingly agile. We need faculty members who are, too.

When I first sat on a hiring committee, I wondered how I'd know which one was 'the one' -- much like a teenaged girl wonders which boy or girl will be her 'the one'.
The thing is -- in both situations, you know 'the one' when you meet them.
