It's that time in the semester

Some students are finding out that they've learned a LOT this semester, and they're surprised (and impressed!) with themselves. I, too, am proud of the strides they've made as they've taken the opportunities I've provided for learning.

Some students are feeling stressed, pressured, unhappy: various reasons, of course, but most of the reasons seem to be related to something I've done wrong. One needs me to meet with the dean *and her mother* to get her money back because somehow I didn't "treat her fairly" in the course.

Hmmm. This student got a job midway through the semester and stopped coming to class after spring break. Last week she contacted me . . . surprising me with her email because she'd dropped completely off my radar. Evidently, though, she's on her mom's radar!

We'll see how Monday goes . . . !

Maybe I'm just old, but I never would have brought my mother to a meeting at my college. I love my mom, but it wasn't her problem to solve for me.

It's not my first experience with mothers, and the sad thing is that the meetings get uncomfortable when my paperwork reveals that the students have been lying to their parents.

And guess what: I've got *another* student whose mother has called our dean: so I'll have two mother-daughter meetings on Monday. Oy.
