TheNewSemester

I'm wondering about a policy I borrowed from my pal Carl Gerriets: if students have perfect attendance, they don't have to take the final.

Oddly, this incentive is really popular. But it leads to emails like this one I just received:

Hi Ms. Daniels,
This is Cassie Schultze from your composition 1021-22 class.  I just wanted to let you know that I have a doctors apt. tomorrow at 2:30 in Eagan.  I am planning on being in class and I will try my best to make it on time, but I do not want to rush this appointment.  I was just wondering, if I were to be 10 minutes late, would that effect my attendances?
Indeed, "would that effect [your] attendances" -- I wonder. No, I don't wonder. Yes, it will affect your attendance.
